World War II  |  Evacuee Register Castle Street & Parliament Street

Many of Stroud's older schools still have Evacuee registers, which kept a tally of all the children who were transported in from places like Birmingham, Coventry and Eastbourne.

It is estimated that at its peak the local population increased by 9,000 due to the war. In April 1941, Lodging Restrictions were brought in for the Stroud district, making it illegal for visitors to stay more than 3 nights in a house without the permission of the billeting officer.
